But, who knows, when the time comes for me to upgrade there might be a new player available that blows the Renu Therapy option out of the (cold) water!

Things to consider when buying an Ice Bath Tub

Before you make a decision on which ice bath tub is right for you, you want to consider a few things.

You want to look at your budget and decide how much of an investment you want to make in your cold plunge practice. Are you looking to spend a few hundred dollars, or several thousand?

Do you need your ice bath tub to be portable? Most portable ice bath tubs are less expensive than some of the more luxury ice baths, so even if you don’t plan on traveling with your tub, you might choose a portable one for the money-saving benefits.

You also need to consider the cost of ice if you’re planning on choosing a cheaper option that’s not self-cooling.

If you want to have a really cold tub every day you might want to calculate how much money ice is going to cost you and factor that into your total costs. It’s possible that a more expensive tub will actually save you money in the long run.

Are you going to keep your tub inside or outside? Make sure that your ice bath choice can handle the elements where you live.

Before you invest in one of the more expensive options, you want to get several ice baths under your belt. Make sure this is something you know you want to do often and for a long time. The last thing you want to do is drop several thousand dollars on a cold plunge tub, use it 15 times, and then be done.

What are the benefits of ice baths?

Ice baths are becoming increasingly popular among health-conscious individuals due to their many health and wellness benefits. While there isn’t a ton of research yet on the benefits of cold exposure, it’s looking promising in a few areas.

The cold exposure you experience in an ice bath may help:

  1. Reduce inflammation
  2. Improve circulation
  3. Increase fat-burning
  4. Support muscle recovery
  5. Strengthen the immune system.

A 2021 study showed that cold exposure “can increase energy expenditure and whole-body glucose and fatty acid utilization.” Repeated cold exposure can lower insulin levels and fasting glucose, even in healthy individuals.

Additionally, it can increase levels of endorphins that keep mood balanced. I think this is the main benefit that keeps people coming back. It’s the part that makes an ice bath so addicting. After the ice bath, you just feel amazing and you keep coming back for more.

Not only that, but immersing yourself in icy temperatures seems to stimulate your immune system so you get sick less.

Cold plunges and ice baths also promote better overall skin health by stimulating lymphatic drainage that expels bacteria and excess oil buildup from your skin’s surface.

These are all amazing benefits of ice baths, but there’s one other thing that I think is something everyone should consider.

Ice baths are a great way to practice being uncomfortable.

It’s never easy to get into an ice bath, but every time you make yourself do it, you’re teaching yourself that you can do hard things. You can push through discomfort and the “I don’t want to’s” and come out better for it.

Not only will you reap the physical benefits of an ice bath, but also its incredible psychological benefits as well. Embrace being uncomfortable and watch yourself become a stronger version of yourself. You can get all of that from a simple ice bath!

How to start a cold plunge practice

The best place to start is with cold showers. If you’re not used to being in ice-cold water of any sort, then a cold shower is going to be hard enough at first.

It’s easy to do. At the end of your shower, just turn the water as cold as it will go and stay in there for at least 30 seconds. As you get more comfortable, increase the time.

The first thing you’ll notice is that your breathing will change. You might start gasping for air. This is normal, just try to slow your breaths down. The best way to do this is to breathe through your nose and try to lengthen your exhales. This will calm you down.

Over time, these cold showers won’t feel very cold at all. That’s when you’ll know you’re ready for some colder water.

You could then invest in one of the ice bath tubs above, or you could experiment with throwing some ice in your bathtub.

Just remember, there’s no rush. There are plenty of benefits with simple cold showers. Keep doing those until you know you’re ready for more.

Risks to be aware of

As always check with your doctor before you begin playing around with ice baths, especially if you have health issues or if you’re on medication.

It’s best to start slow. No need to plunge yourself into 35ºF ice cold water the first time you try it. Start with cold showers and work your way up.

It’s also smart to have someone with you the first time you try an ice bath. You never know how your body will react to sudden changes in temperature and it’s best to play it safe, especially when water is involved.

Adding cold exposure into your health and wellness routine could be beneficial on so many levels and there are several good options when it comes to choosing which ice bath tub is right for you. You need to consider your budget and where you want to put your ice bath tub – especially if you live in extreme hot or cold climates. You also need to consider how you want your ice bath to look.

Once you’ve taken all of those things into consideration, it should be easier to decide which ice bath tub on the list is right for you. Just know, that you can’t go wrong with any of these.

My main piece of advice is to at least start taking some cold showers, or make an ice bath in your bath tub before you decide to invest in one of the more expensive options.

You want to know that you are getting some benefits from this new habit before you decide to purchase a dedicated ice bath tub. It’s also not a bad idea to start with a budget option and use it for a while before you drop a hefty chunk of change on a luxury ice tub.

No matter what choice you go with, stay safe, have fun, and go get chilly!
